Title Page (1938) "Think and Grow Rich" by Napoleon Hill

How did the title page of Napoleon Hill's book "Think and Grow Rich" look in 1938?

The picture is a facsimile of the first title page of "Think and Grow Rich" by Napoleon Hill. The book was first published in March 1937. 5000 copies were printed then. I have not yet found an original title page from 1937 but it may have looked just alike.

And that's what it says:

        THINK and
       GROW RICH

Napoleon Hill on Emotions in "Think and Grow Rich"

The 11th Step toward Riches in Napoleon Hill's "Think and Grow Rich" is The Subconscious Mind: The Connecting Link

Emotions can have a big impact on our thoughts. Thus, it is a good idea to spend some time on the exploration of our emotions. To give you a quick guideline, I will cite some lines from "Think and Grow Rich" by Napoleon Hill.

This is a brief excerpt from the chapter The Subconscious Mind: The Connecting Link. Napoleon Hill lists The Seven Major Positive Emotions and The Seven Major Negative Emotions.

Napoleon Hill writes:

>> Let us, therefore describe here the seven major positive emotions, and the seven major negative emotions, so that you may draw upon the positives, and avoid the negatives, when giving instructions to your subconscious mind.

THE SEVEN MAJOR POSITIVE EMOTIONS

The emotion of DESIRE
The emotion of FAITH
The emotion of LOVE
The emotion of SEX
The emotion of ENTHUSIASM
The emotion of ROMANCE
The emotion of HOPE

There are other positive emotions, but these are the seven most powerful, and the  ones  most  commonly  used  in  creative  effort.  Master  these  seven  emotions (they can be mastered only by USE), and the other positive emotions will be at your command when you need them.

Remember, in this connection, that you are studying a book which is intended to help you develop a “money consciousness” by filling your mind with positive emotions. One does not become money conscious by filling one’s mind with negative emotions.

THE SEVEN MAJOR NEGATIVE EMOTIONS
(To be avoided)

The emotion of FEAR
The emotion of JEALOUSY
The emotion of HATRED
The emotion of REVENGE
The emotion of GREED
The emotion of SUPERSTITION
The emotion of ANGER

Positive and negative emotions cannot occupy the mind at the same time. One or
the other must dominate. It is your responsibility to make sure that positive emotions constitute the dominating influence of your mind. Here the law of HABIT
will come to your aid.

Form the habit of applying and using the positive emotions! Eventually, they will
dominate your mind so completely, that the negatives cannot enter it.<<

"A Year Of Growing Rich" - is this a book by Napoleon Hill?

It is called: "Napoleon Hill's A Year of Growing Rich - 52 Steps to Achieving Life's Rewards - Foreword by W. Clement Stone

Wow!, was my first thought. Great, an unknown book by Napoleon Hill. I had always the notion that Napoleon Hill had authored or co-authored 12 books. Should this be #13?

A quick research showed: This book was first published in 1993, 23 years after Napoleon Hill had passed away. Some further research revealed that the book's content is based on Napoleon Hill's "Think and Grow Rich". So, let's call it a very late posthumously published book by Napoleon Hill.

While I searched for more information about "A Year of Growing Rich", I found this great book summary which gives a perfect example of Napoleon Hill's thinking and writing. You can read the book summary/review here:

Can You Think Yourself Rich? 5 steps to attracting money into your life

Brief blog post by Marianne Curphey about 5 steps to attracting money into your life, two new books and the most famous book on the topic: "Think and Grow Rich" by Napoleon Hill

Marianne Curphey's blog post is short, yet it provides very useful information about the habit of thinking in order to get rich.

She refers to Napoleon Hill and his book "Think and Grow Rich" before she cites Marie Claire Carlyle's 5 point plan for attracting money.

These 5 points are sound and they are reason enough to mention Marianne Curphey's post here.

The only thing left to do yourself, is to apply them to your mindset of money and getting rich.

The Most Simple Time Management Method in the World

Why the word of mouth sometimes not only hits the ear but the mind as well

It may have been during a conversation of Napoleon Hill with Charles M. Schwab (the steel-magnate who is being extensively mentioned in "Think and Grow Rich" and "The Law of Success in 16 Lessons"), when Charles M. Schwab told Napoleon Hill the story of Ivy Lee and his idea of a time management system.

It turned out that Ivy Lee's time management system was both simple and powerful. Charles Schwab was excited enough to reward Lee for this idea with $ 25.000.- ($ 285.750.- in todays buying power). Read the story with a description of Lee's time management system here:

Just a blog snippet on "Think and Grow Rich" by Napoleon Hill and a great essay

The American Dream, the Positive Gospel, Napoleon Hill's "Think and Grow Rich" and other (entrepreneurial) thinking men

The paragraph below is a quote from a commentary by Rich Karlgaard entitled "The Gospel of Hope" on his blog "Digital Rules" on Forbes.com

First and foremost his article is about the American Dream and the positive gospel. I really recommend you to read it. His essay is rather short. But Rich Karlgaard takes you on a journey to the origins of the American Dream. Don't miss it:

http://www.forbes.com/global/2007/1112/020.html

I like what he writes about Napoleon Hill and "Think and Grow Rich":

"During the worst year of the Great Depression, 1937, a writer named Napoleon Hill picked the positive gospel out of the gutter and lifted the spirits of the country with his bestseller, Think and Grow Rich. Riches, wrote Hill, were available to anyone who changed his attitude. "Thoughts are things," he wrote. States Hill's Wikipedia entry: "Hill was a devout Christian and did not see any conflict between his success philosophy and his religious faith. … Hill stated that the success formula required a complete and total understanding of the spirit of giving. He named this concept 'the Golden Rule.'"

What Others Say about "Think and Grow Rich" by Napoleon Hill

Read some impressive statements about the predecessor of Napoleon Hill's "Think and Grow Rich", made by 3 famous men

The first book published by Napoleon Hill was "The Law of Success in 16 Lessons". It was published in 1928 and contained the Philosophy of Personal Success and Achievement, Andrew Carnegie had in mind, when he commissioned Napoleon Hill to write it.

Here are some quotes of well known people about "The Law of Success in 16 Lessons":

"Allow me to express my appreciation of the compliment you have paid me in sending the original manuscript of the Law of Success. I can see you have spent a great deal of time and thought in its preparation. Your philosophy is sound and you are to be congratulated for sticking to your work over so long a period of years. Your students will be amply rewarded for their labor."
Thomas Alva Edison

"Your work and mine are peculiarly akin. I am helping the laws of Nature to create more perfect specimens of vegetation while you are using those same laws through The Law of Success to build more perfect specimens of thinkers."
Luther Burbank

"Certainly I will supply you with the information you request. This I consider to be not only a duty, but it is a pleasure as well. You are laboring in behalf of the people who have neither the time nor the inclination to ferret out the causes of failure and success."
Theodore Roosevelt

A shaped and condensed version of "The Law of Success in 16 Lessons" was published 9 years later in 1937 and was entitled "Think and Grow Rich". It was an instant and continuing success and sold over 60 million copies so far. Now you can get a free copy of "Think and Grow Rich" by Napoleon Hill. Click here.

Why Not Talk About Failure? In Leadership (from Napoleon Hill's "Think and Grow Rich")

The 10 Major Causes of Failure in Leadership - as described in "Think and Grow Rich" by Napoleon Hill

Sometimes, knowing what not to do is as important as knowing what to do. In his book "Think and Grow Rich", Napoleon Hill presents a list of the 10 Major Causes of Failure in Leadership:

  1. Inability to organize details
  2. Unwillingness to render humble service
  3. Expectation of pay for what they "know" instead of what they do with that which they know
  4. Fear of competition from followers
  5. Lack of imagination
  6. Selfishness
  7. Intemperance
  8. Disloyalty
  9. Emphasis of the "authority" of leadership
  10. Emphasis of title
Dr. Hill outlines these points in more detail in his famous book "Think and Grow Rich". See there chapter 7, "Organized Planning: The Crystallization of Desire into Action".

The Entrepreneur

From Michael Gerber's "E-Myth Revisited" - the book for owners of small businesses

This is a brief quote that I found in Michael Gerber's best-selling book "The E-Myth Revisited". It is about entrepreneurs and entrepreneurship and I love it. Perhaps you like it, too.

"The entrepreneurial personality turns the most trivial condition into an exceptional opportunity. The Entrepreneur is the visionary in us. The dreamer. The energy behind every human activity. The imagination that sparks the fire of the future. The catalyst for change.
The Entrepreneur lives in the future, never in the past, rarely in the present. He's happiest when left free to construct images of "what-if" and "if-when"."

Gerber, Michael E. (1995). The E-Myth revisited: why most small businesses don't work and what to do about it (3rd ed.). New York, NY: HarperCollins, p. 23 f.

There is left to add, that this entrepreneur is just one of three fractions inside the owner of a small business. The other two guys are the Technician and the Manager - similar to the Walt-Disney-Strategy.

Anyway. If you are the owner of a small (or not so small) business, this book might be an interesting read for you. You can get it at Amazon and Barnes & Noble or support your local bookstore and buy it there.
